Houses & Colors
Our school places a significant priority to social, emotional and physical development of each learner. It is divided into six sub units called ‘houses’ and are recognised in different colours. Upon admission, each child is allotted a house and a badge that must be displayed on the school uniform. These houses compete with each other at sports and other extra-curricular activities.
House System
It exists mainly for the purpose of healthy competition based on the philosophy of inclusion and team work. At our institution, a growing number of varied competitions are held that have house points connected to them. These points are accumulated throughout the year to produce an overall winning House.
School Ethos
The concept of ‘house’ system was developed primarily to instil loyalty among the learners. In our school, pupils are usually assigned to houses randomly with an aim of balancing the houses in order to increase a sense of community and healthy competition. Its ethos is based on the social and emotional needs of the student and to ensure proper peer mentoring is enhanced with the right fit of students within a house. Once a pupil has been allocated to a house, they stay with that house as they move up through the year groups. This also provides an opportunity for senior learners to become mentor(s) to younger students.
School Houses
We have four houses in the names of leaves and specific colors- Agni (Red), Vayu (Yellow), Jal (Blue), Dhara (Green)
House Captains
At the beginning of the academic year, meetings are held to elect House Captains. One boy and one girl from senior grade are elected from each house. These students are chosen by their classmates, faculty and the Physical Education teachers. The job of these students is mainly to gather the rest of the house members and help in the organization of the different inter-house events. The job of the house captains is to take responsibility for leadership and organisation of their house through the upcoming academic year.
House Competitions
In our school, various house competitions take place throughout the year. All competitions give students the opportunity to win house points. Learners quickly form an allegiance to their house and a sense of fun and friendly competition pervades all house events.
House points are added and the house with most points at the end of the year wins a coveted overall best house position. Our inter-house competitions are held in 5-a-side Football, 6-a-side Cricket, Cross-Country, Drama, Hockey, Netball, Performing Arts, Sports Day, Swimming and Tennis.
Rewarding Consequences
Our educators observed that inserting the house points system clearly brought about a positive pupils’ contribution and acted as a deterrent for misbehaviour. It motivates the learners and encourages them to invest in their time at school.
Relevance in Global Context
The house concept provides our pupils with opportunities to take responsibility, leadership and to become role models. It creates a sense of belonging and eliminates hostility, thus providing interaction amid learners of various ages.
